Scooter
was a Schnauzer who was born with cataracts and was blind since birth.
When he was 4 years old, his owners took him to a vet to be put down.
The people at the vet's office said, "There's just something about
him...." and they couldn't do it, so they arranged for him to come to Journey's End.
Soon after coming here, he had surgery for his cataracts. After he came
back from surgery, it took awhile for him to wake up from the
anesthesia. Around 11:00pm that night, he woke briefly and went over to look at the
TV for a moment, but he was still groggy and soon went back to sleep.
When he woke in the morning, he could see for the first time in his life
(other than his brief glimpse of TV the night before). He was so excited
that he ran and ran, barking at everything he saw. He chased the cats,
and went up to the
other dogs
just to look at them, and ran some more, barking the whole time. After
that it seemed he
never stopped barking.
Scooter lived in the PeeWee room with his best friend
Willy and the other small dogs.
He eventually went deaf, but that didn't slow him down. He died of
cancer of the spleen at age 12.
